Welcome

About the Tryouts

Tryouts are coordinated by the Avon Lake Travel Baseball & Softball Association. Whether your player is new to travel ball or returning for another season, we want every athlete to feel comfortable, supported, and excited to show what they can do.

Player evaluations are conducted by the Avon Lake High School varsity baseball program. ALTBSA parent and community volunteers help run registration, stations, and group movement so every player gets a fair, consistent look at all skill areas.

Baseball tryouts run two evenings at two locations. Each player attends both nights — defensive stations one night and offensive stations the other, based on age group. See the schedule below for registration times and locations.

Weiss Field · Avon Lake High School

Our Approach

We focus on player development, honest evaluation, and building teams that compete with sportsmanship and pride in Avon Lake. Prior travel experience is not required — effort, attitude, and coachability matter at every age.

Plan Ahead

Players must attend both July 13 and July 14. Each age group is evaluated at infield, outfield, hitting, and pitching across the two nights. Arrive at check-in time for your player’s age group. If your player cannot attend July 13 or 14, contact tryouts@altbsa.org. Makeup arrangements are limited and require director approval—please do not attend without confirmation.

A Note to Parents & Guardians

We kindly ask that parents and guardians give players space during tryouts. Many kids perform better with a little distance, and we want to help them feel confident and focused. They know it’s a big day too. Thank you for your support and for helping us create a positive, respectful tryout environment.

Weiss Field: use designated parent viewing areas away from active stations.

ALHS Auxiliary Gym: for safety, parents and guardians may not enter the gym during tryouts. Drop off at the North entrance; players check in and enter with their group captain.

In case of inclement weather or schedule changes, ALTBSA will notify registered families by email and post updates on altbsa.org/tryouts and social media. Check those channels before heading out.

Transparent & Fair

What We’re Evaluating

Evaluations use a station-based format so every player gets a chance to demonstrate skills in a structured, encouraging environment. There is no single “make or break” moment — coaches review performance across all areas below.

Hitting

Mechanics, bat speed, and ability to make consistent contact.

Fielding

Glove work, footwork, and readiness on ground balls and fly balls.

Throwing

Arm strength, accuracy, and proper throwing mechanics.

Baserunning

Speed, instincts, and effort running the bases.

Athleticism & Intangibles

Effort, attitude, coachability, hustle, and overall athletic ability.

Find Your Division

Age Groups

ALTBSA fields competitive travel teams across multiple age divisions. Younger divisions emphasize learning, reps, and fun; older divisions place greater emphasis on readiness for competitive league play.

All baseball age groups (7U–14U) try out on July 13 & 14, 2026. Baseball registration is closed. See the full schedule for check-in times and locations each night.

Softball (10U, 12U & 14U) — one night at ALHS Auxiliary Gym, Monday, August 10, 2026. Online registration is closed. See the current softball schedule.

Baseball — Developing Divisions

Welcoming, developmental focus — grow your skills and enjoy the game.

7U 8U 9U

Perfect for players exploring travel baseball or building fundamentals. Coaches look for effort, coachability, and potential — not just current stats.

Baseball — Competitive Divisions

Higher expectations for skill, game awareness, and team competition.

10U 11U 12U 13U 14U

Athletes should demonstrate solid fundamentals and the ability to contribute at a competitive travel level. Evaluators assess readiness for league play and positional fit. All baseball age groups try out on July 13 & 14, 2026.

Softball — 10U

A friendly, developmental introduction to travel fastpitch.

10U

We encourage players who want to learn the game in a supportive setting. Attitude, effort, and willingness to learn are just as important as current skill level.

Softball — 12U & 14U

Competitive fastpitch with emphasis on team readiness and execution.

12U 14U

Players are evaluated on all-around ability and fit for competitive travel softball. Strong fundamentals and game instincts help roster placement at these levels.

Multiple teams may be formed at each age level depending on registration numbers, talent distribution, and coaching availability. Avon Lake residents receive priority for roster spots.

After Tryouts

Roster Selection & Timeline

We know families are eager for answers. Here is how final decisions are made and when you can expect to hear from us.

The Board and coaching leadership aim to send initial roster invitations on July 19, 2026, at the close of Summer Classic. Final decisions are based on evaluations across every station, along with positional needs and overall team balance. No athlete is guaranteed a spot based solely on prior participation — every player earns their place through tryouts.

Thank you for your patience as we build balanced, competitive teams for the 2027 season.

Day of Tryouts

What to Expect

Tryouts use a station-based format — players rotate through skill stations rather than playing a full scrimmage. Arrive ready to listen, hustle, and do your best.

  1. Check In

Arrive at registration time for your age group. Receive a numbered bib and head to your warmup area.

  2. Rotate Stations

Move through infield, outfield, hitting, pitching, and timed running across both tryout nights with your squad. At Weiss: home-to-home running. At ALHS: home to first base.

  3. Give Your Best

Stay positive and hustle. Squads rotate through all stations with their group captain each evening.

Be Prepared

What to Bring

Come ready for a full evaluation. If you are missing an item, let a coach know at check-in.

  • Glove
  • Bat (if you have one)
  • Batting helmet
  • Water bottle
  • Weiss Field nights: baseball cleats
  • ALHS nights: indoor running shoes only — no cleats in the gym
  • Positive attitude

We Need Your Help

Volunteer at Tryouts

ALTBSA needs roughly 40–50 volunteers each evening across Weiss Field and Avon Lake High School (July 13 & 14). Evaluators are provided by the Avon Lake HS varsity baseball program — we are recruiting parents and community members for the roles below. No baseball experience required for most positions. Sign up on SignUpGenius to pick your night, location, and role.

Registration

Check players in, assign numbered bibs, direct families to warmup areas. Separate table per age group.

~10–12 per night

Group Captain

Lead a squad of up to 12 same-age players and move them station-to-station on time.

~12–15 per night

Station Support

Help at infield, outfield, hitting, or pitching stations — ball feeding, line leading, equipment setup.

~20–25 per night

Site Captain

Oversee one location (Weiss or ALHS), coordinate volunteers, and support the tryout director.

2 per night (board leads)
